Richie Havens
Saturday, May 5
Richie Havens is gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. His fiery, poignant, always soulful singing style has remained unique and ageless since he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960's. Havens' Woodstock appearance proved to be a major turning point in his career. As the festival's opening act, he held the multitudes spellbound for nearly three hours. Called back for yet another encore, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual "Motherless Child" that became "Freedom," which eventually reached an audience of millions.
For four decades, Havens has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. With over twenty albums released and a rigorous touring schedule, he continues to view his calling as a high one. As he told The Denver Post, "I really sing songs that move me. I'm not in show business; I'm in the communications business. That's what it's about for me."

Csurdongolo Folk Dance

Each region of Hungary has its own particular style of music and dance, and staying authentic in presenting them, the group generally wears the appropriate folk attire of the region where the piece originates from. The wide age range within the group permits the knowledge to be passed from generation to generation.

Hoh Daiko Drummers
Saturday, May 5
A traditional Japanese drum group whose playing is inspired by the teachings of the Buddha switching from drum to drum, keeping the rhythms going as they move from position to position in a graceful choreography that is evocative of some martial arts stances and body movements. It is exhilarating to watch—and to perform. All of the Seabrook drummers regard their group as a spiritual activity that requires discipline and unity among the members. Not all the drummers are Buddhist or, indeed, ethnically Japanese. But as Ellen Nakamura has said while introducing a Hoh Daiko program, "they do regard their drumming as a form of meditation."
